I maybe belch once a year if that and even then it’s so tiny and silent and so entirely surprising to me that I have to grab passing strangers by the arm urgently and go, “Did you hear that? I totally burped right then and it tasted like Irn Bru!”, then when I pick myself up off the ground and wipe the Mace out of my eyes, I am delighted with myself. Because I never burp! It’s a momentous occasion worthy of a national holiday.
My grandma on my dad’s side, however, was possibly a world champion of burping, although I never saw a trophy or anything “official”. The woman was tall, sweet, cheerful, athletic and sprightly even in her older years, but she could belch like an overfed trucker in a vat of Pepsi. And because she was old, she could belch with complete impunity. People over 70 can do that you know. They can burp or fart anytime they want and they don’t even have to acknowledge it or blame the dog. They don’t need manners or etiquette anymore. They’re all “Screw you guys, I’m 70, I have earned the right to expel noxious gases from my person anytime I want, just you try and stop me, paaaaaaaarrrrrrrrrrrp.”
And it’s hilarious. It is. It is the funniest thing ever in the history of funny things (except maybe that funny thing with The Hoff and the cheeseburger).
So we’d be sitting there at Christmas dinner, my whole family and grandparents and everything and in the middle of the trifle, my grandma would be producing this sound that I imagine wasn’t unlike the reaction you’d get if you stuck a tube into Michael Moore’s belly button and screamed the word “REPUBLICANS!” down it. And of course the adults at the table would politely ignore this like it never even happened, because grandma is old and she can’t help herself. My grandma would be telling a story and there’d be a giant, five second mega-burp half way through a sentence and she’d continue like nothing happened. My jaw would hit the table with delight and only a warning glance from my mum would shut me up. And, as we kids learned, the response to this giant Tuba of a belch was not to rip a fart that sounded like someone had torn their pants, no matter how funny that is. Grandma’s belching can be ignored, but we get sent to our rooms, that was how it went.
My sister inherited my grandma’s prowess in the belching arena. She can belch entire sentences and I’d rupture things laughing at her. My favourite thing was my sister’s ability to belch “YOU TALK BOLLOCKS!” on demand. It was an art form. Trust me on this.
She is also better at farting than I am and could produce the most obnoxiously stinky eggers you ever experienced, which, as we shared a room in our early years, wasn’t a great triumph in my opinion. But she could also out-volume the stereo which was funny. See how it goes? Loud = hilarious, stinky = not at all hilarious, unless I did it.
A few years ago, while being evacuated from the Keys due to Hurricane Rita, she and I ended up in a beachfront hotel in Fort Myers, Florida, in the pouring rain with nothing to do but drink beer and eat pizza in our room. Our typical conversations that week were a bit like this:
Her: Well it sucks that we didn’t get to stay in the Keys but you know what?
Me: What?
Her: PTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHPPPPRP!
Me: DUDE….REALLY?
Her: Better out than in.
Me: I guess at least we’re on the beach with a view and everything. It could be worse.
Her: I know. You know what would be a lot worse?
Me: What’s that?
Her: BBBBTHHHHHFFFFFPPPPPPPPPPPPP! PPPPPPPRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRP!
Me: Jesus fuck. Open a window!
Her: Hahaha.
Then to rub salt in the wound, she’d belch. My peeps. We be classy.
Ahhh hahahah your sister and you sound like my sister and I. Except the offender was usually my mother and both of us developed a deep fear of the smell of farts...
ReplyDeleteBut really, I feel for you not being able to burp. It really feels amazing to just let her ripppp!
That's the thing! I really want to do it. I can tell I'd feel better if I could sometimes. Yet...nothing. I am a FREAK!
ReplyDeleteI ran BBBBTHHHHHFFFFFPPPPPPPPPPPPP! through Babelfish, but nothing...
ReplyDeleteAw Tex. Babelfish can't translate awesome.
ReplyDeleteWhat do you mean you CAN'T burp? I thought everyone had to burp or they'd explode? But maybe this is why I failed biology.
ReplyDeleteSee the thing is, sometimes I FEEL like I'm going to explode and that I need to get some C02 out of my top half fast but it just won't come out. I don't know how to MAKE myself burp either. Even though I drink a lot of fizzy diet Pepsi I never burp. It IS weird isn't it? I'm not normal.
ReplyDeletems. abby said the best reaction to a fart is to ignore it. i suppose the same goes to burping?
ReplyDeleteSee it depends on the fart and who does it and how amusing a sound it is and if it's accidental and embarrassing or blatant. Because accidental farts are WAY more funny than blatant ones. :)
ReplyDeletehey- stopping over from Meatbag's site- you're hilarious! i once had a roommate who couldn't burp and whenever he needed to he'd just lean over the sink and kind of dry heave. very attractive.
ReplyDeleteHahaha, what a great image! I'm not sure I feel the need to do that, but I do feel like I'd like to just give a monster belch and deflate sometimes. :) Plus, if you can burp and talk at the same time it's pretty much hysterical forever.
ReplyDeleteYou can't drink a can of Coca Cola and then belch???
ReplyDeleteIf you can't do that, then I would be afraid to find out what is expelled from the other end! lol
Affirmative, Otie Steroid! (thanks Jenny!) I can drink an entire litre of Diet Pepsi full of fizzy goodness and not a belch will escape my...whatever a belch escapes from. I don't fluff (that's what ladies' farts are called you know, "fluffs") any more than a normal person either so I don't know where all that gas goes. Oh WAIT....yes I do. THIS BLOG!
ReplyDeleteYou'd love my family! All I have to do is sniff lettuce and whoee! Nice to meet you!
ReplyDeleteNice to meet you, fellow fart person. :) I'm pretty reserved with my farts though mostly. If I could belch however, I'd be belching loud and proud. I'd call for a pizza and belch my order. Awesome!
ReplyDeleteThe phrase "stinky eggers" is much funnier than any of Dave Eggers' books. Nice one.
ReplyDeleteYou can't burp? Holy fuck. That's Edward Scissor-hands kind of horrible.
ReplyDeleteI shed a tear on your behalf.
Senor Street: Man, you have no idea of the level of egger stinkitude we're talking here. That girl's innards must be rotten. :) This is no way to start a new year though, talking about bodily noises!
ReplyDeleteHunter: I know! People don't realize how bad it is. There's no release! I might actually explode.
Oh, well, Veg; we all suffer from our various disabilities--lackaburp happens to be yours.
ReplyDeleteThis is so true. It could be worse. Can you imagine if I couldn't TYPE?
ReplyDeleteGrowing up in my house, it was almost a cardinal sin not to be as disgusting as you possibly be to make family members laugh. Which is why I don't understand why my sister and her husband don't burp or fart in front of each other. It's like going to bed with makeup and waking up before your significant other to reapply. It's just a charade.
ReplyDeleteRecently, my kid has started belching and letting 'em rip on purpose. IT. NEVER. STOPS. BEING. FUNNY.
Oh my God, honestly, if I had kids it would be so difficult to discipline them for things like that because I'd crack up. :) It must honestly be painful not allowing yourself to slip one out in front of your partner. I mean you might EXPLODE everywhere. Haha!
ReplyDeleteI'm glad to see the word "egger" getting some play. I think it is way underused.
ReplyDeleteWhile I can hold my own when it comes to bodily emissions - both in terms of volume and odor - my brother is the hands-down champ of our family. His farts smell like a fish died in the Pachyderm house at the zoo.
"stinky eggers"...ha ha ha!
ReplyDeleteI can count the number of times I have burped on my hands and toes.
ReplyDeleteI FEEL SO MUCH LESS ALONE.
When I was younger I had fright at the same time I burped... you might be wondering why I'm telling you this but all will become clear - without becoming too gross! One of my friends (with a smidge of medical knowledge) said that the fright made me breath in deeply at exactly the same time my throat was open to do a little lady burp. As a result, I gulped in an entire stomach load of air! The resulting post fright burp was an earth shuddering uber explosion of epic proportion. Since then I have been able to turn every little burp into a major seismological event ;-)
ReplyDeleteAs for farting... you have to let it out otherwise it buids up and up until the presure travels up your spine and into your brain - and that is where shitty ideas come from!!!
"People over 70 can do that you know. They can burp or fart anytime they want and they don’t even have to acknowledge it or blame the dog."
ReplyDeleteI'm pretty sure that's because people over 70 don't even know they do it.
I can't wait for 70.
I remember Chris Evans on the Big Breakfast once proclaiming that it's a scientific fact that if you don't parp at least ten times a day, you'll explode and die.
ReplyDeleteI take him at his word.
He never said anything about burping, though. There's got to be a course or something you can take for burping. Have you looked to see if the Open University offers one?
i cannot, for the life of me, get a brain freeze. i blame my inability to swallow fast enough.
ReplyDeletebut i can burp. on cue, too. there there veg.
Your sister sounds HOT!
ReplyDeleteSo does/did your Grammy!
I'm thinking....smelly 3-way....with sound effects.
It would be like an Assymphony.
One time when I had come home from college, I was sitting quietly in the guest room reading when I let one go and one of my brothers screamed, "Why didn't anyone tell me Jeney was home?!"
ReplyDeleteI guess it's become my trademark.
I too am eructationally-challenged. However, my flatulance can peel paint from a wall and concus small furry animals at 20 paces.
ReplyDeleteSG: It's a great word and for some of those bottom burps it is the perfect description. Eggers are the worst. you can't escape them, they follow you!
ReplyDeleteCDP: Hahaha, you laugh now but when you're sat in the middle of one it's less hilarious.
Hannah: YAY! Thank God someone else is like me. I can get through entire years without the tiniest burp. I think really you and I are just too ladylike for such nonsense. Yes, that must be it.
Miss Tee: YOU ACQUIRED THE TALENT THROUGH FRIGHT? Maybe I need to try that. When I was a kid the only way I'd burp ever was if I had a hiccup fit and someone made me laugh and I laughed at the exact moment I hiccuped. Then I might burp. I hardly seem to get hiccups nowadays...
Moooooog: Hmmm, you are making a good point. Or maybe they're just proud of their achievement. I mean, they've retired and have been needing a new hobby to be proud of. Why not noises!
Rich: Well anything the ginger Evans says is gospel, OBVIOUSLY. :)
P: Oddly enough I have never had a brain freeze either, HOWEVER...I get it in my upper chest instead. Every time I have a Slurpee or a margarita or something I get chest freeze. And it effing HURTS! But never in my head.
Ed: Oh yeah. She could fart serenade you! It's very romantic.
Jeney: HAHAHAHA! Well at least you're GOOD at it then. I mean you're infamous in your family at least. :)
Rusty: See that's what I call "balance". One end doesn't perform so the other makes up for it by being twice as poisonous. That seems fair. But my farts are almost harmless. It's like the final insult.
You get Irn Bru in Canada wow :o
ReplyDeleteWhat ripe, bold curries you sauce the language with, Vegetable Assassin!
ReplyDeleteIt's one of the few countries who are licensed to sell it although I only know of one chain that does, which I frequent regularly for my fix. The Canadian version has no caffeine in it though, so BOO! And it tastes SLIGHTLY different, but not too much. I can tell though. But on the plus side, it IS Barr's! I can't find the Diet version unfortunately.
ReplyDeleteDogimo: Haha, I laughed aloud at that. I am stealing that line. Oh curries. Those make you blast butt-bombs like a champion!
ReplyDeleteSteal it? Why, it's yours!
ReplyDeleteSeriously, I feel bad how little I comment in here. A lot of the time I can't even think of anything apt to say about what you write. And if I may say so, it takes some damn doing to stop my mill grinding in its tracks and just knock me back to sit there and - appreciate!
Ok, and I think my pixely avatar's in love with your pixely avatar. 'Nuff on that.
It's pretty funny because I always read your blog and want to leave you a comment that says "Dude, you are such a FREAK and I mean that as a compliment!" but I never do because well...no one wants to be called a freak all the time even if it's a good freak, so I limit myself to OCCASIONALLY.
ReplyDeleteThat comment, if you read it fast, sounds like I'm mainlining a sugar/cocaine combination. I AM eating chocolate...
As my father always said..."What does not pay rent must get out!" I wonder what possible use your body has of all that CO2?? I've never had any problem expelling air out of either end and my hiccups are legend! I feel for you veg....you have some lodgers who are not paying rent down there in your gut.
ReplyDeleteYou have the knack of making the most mundane and grossest of things sound funny.
ReplyDeleteLoud fart+belch = Gross. Funny, though :D
Ah Veg, I've been reliably informed that old people let flee a lot more farts simply because they are DEAF and think that they're dropping wee silent ones.
ReplyDeleteUsed to hear my grannt farting before she appeared in the door!
That's hilarious!
ReplyDeleteIf anyone burped at our dinner table, The Grandmother would give a 30 minute lecture and you wouldn't get any dessert.
But at home, my tiny teenage sister lets them rip. I swear she burps 70 times a day. And they should like moose mating calls. It used to be funny. Now it's just background noise.
I think I'd like your sister.
Scorned lady: Yeah! I should bill those effers. My gut is not a half way house, freeloaders! :)
ReplyDeleteI used to have big, painful hiccups. Not anymore though. I don't miss those one bit.
Aphrodite: The time farts are funniest is when you do a duet. Like if you sneeze or cough violently and a fart slips out at the same time from all the exertion. Those crack me up. Especially if they're in perfect harmony.
Macy: That makes total sense. Like if you're wearing headphones and think you're sneaking them out but really....oops. I best stop doing that.
Ms. OWO: My sister was always good at conquering the cool skills. Burping, farting, wolf whistling really loud, using hubcap valve caps to whistle through...I could never master any of them. She could also do the Rubix cube as a kid in about three minutes. I was hopeless at even completing a side.
Perhaps you're just more of a farter. Nothing wrong with that...
ReplyDeleteNo, like I said, I don't poot more than average either. No balance there. Maybe I am just a natural born LADY?
ReplyDeleteYet another explosively funny post!
ReplyDeleteI remember reading a poster (or maybe it was a nursery rhyme we used to say at school)...
"Girls don't burp or fart, if we didn't bitch we'd explode!"
I reckon I'm an above average performer at all 3!
Hahaha, damn you! I suck at them. Well I can manage "bitchy" I suppose, especially if I'm PMSy and there's no Little Debbie Snack Cakes around. :) I actually had people try to teach me to burp but apparently my strained burp face was hilarious. And I still didn't burp. :(
ReplyDeleteI know your pain. I can't burp either! Maybe there are others out there. We should start a support group for the burpless.
ReplyDeleteWe could declare ourselves a charity, get lots of donations and use it to buy margaritas and cake!!!!
ReplyDeleteI may look like a lady, but I am officially a pig. I wish there was a valve to shut off burps and farts. At moments when I'm not farting or burping most likely I'm supressing farts and burps and that is terribly uncomfortable. So, suffice it to say, I'm jealous of your lack of toot-ability.
ReplyDelete(Removes glasses quickly and takes on serious tone)
Although Veg - I must say I'm also worried because if I understand correctly you are a vegetarian and the laws of gastro-intestinal nature dictate that your vegetarianism should be causing you to create tremendous amounts of noxious gasses to be released. It's not normal.
Well technically, Lady, i am a baconarian because I eat bacon but no other meat or fish or poultry because I am strange. My theory is the bacon counteracts all that noxious veggie gas business and produces instead, an ecologically safe and pleasant digestive system (with the occasional egger when I've been bad) :)
ReplyDeleteyou poor child! we rate our gaseous explosions in this house. and we were always instructed to ignore my granny's farts. now i'm the one who has to instruct my kids to ignore them as i stifle my laughter.
ReplyDeleteBut do you grade them? I think a grading system would be fun. It would highlight your most "fragrant" and most "deadly" fart times of the month. "Shit it's the 17th, better stay in your room tonight kids!"
ReplyDeleteThis is exactly why it's sad and lonely being an only child!!! I want someone's burps to look up to! :(
ReplyDeleteMy step-sister is 9 yrs older and we didn't live together, but whenever I saw her she would torture me with the pinning me down and dripping spit on my face trickaroonie. NOT COOL.
Oh man, that's nasty! I hope you got some revenge later. :) BIG revenge.
ReplyDeleteI demand a video/recording of your sister burping 'You Talk Bollocks!'
ReplyDeleteStat, woman, stat...
Run out of wank material, dude? I see we're getting desperate!
ReplyDeletewe discussed your predicament over some enthusiastic lunch belches today. mary says she thinks something's wrong with you. you know it's bad when the special calls you out!
ReplyDeleteFuck, I'm down with anything that little sasquatch-crotch says. BRING IT, MARY! :) (I fucking love Mary)
ReplyDeletebest. comeback. ever. EVER! i am SO stealing sasquatch-crotch.
ReplyDeleteI stole it from Spunky. In a manner of speaking. That dirty bastard.
ReplyDeleteThat conversation between you and your sister during the hurricane is GOLD.
ReplyDeleteAnd I'm glad I'm not the only smart person that is incapable of solving a Rubik's Cube.
Wordseh: Those damn cubes. I have sulked over my dumbassedness on those things for years. She'd just turn a few things and voila! Me, I'd be absolutely perplexed. Stupid things.
ReplyDeleteWait...did you call me smart? I didn't pay you or anything. :)
Omg, I'm suffocating on my own giggling. Veggie, can I PLEASE, PLEASE join your family? Because no one appreciates my epic belching skills over here. I used to do ... that other thing ... on command, too (I'm a lady, okay, you fill in the blank).
ReplyDeleteBut best story ever, and the one that had my former boss rolling was that for the longest time, I'd come home from work, knock back a diet coke, BELLLLEEEEERRRRP, and my mom, having no idea I'd come home, would call down the stairs, "Oh hey, Becca. How was your day?"
You know how they say hunters can identify their hounds by their bays? My mother can identify me by my belching ... oh God, I can NOT believe I'm admitting this on the Internet. See how much I love you? Ha.
I need your talent miss B. Send me some. BRAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAP! :) See, I appreciate your talents!
ReplyDeleteI'm a pretty good burper... a talent I acquired now in my 30s by the way. My sister is not too bad either. I wish I could do it on queue though... you know, like those people who can burp along with song melodies. Now THAT'S freaking AWESOME.
ReplyDeleteI shared a room with my gas-gifted sister too. She GROSSED ME THE FUCK OUT daily. Bitch.
ReplyDeleteNow she visits me complaining of how obnoxiously gassy her husband and son are, that she can't complete a sentance without someone farting like a duck. Justice. Justice is served. I love it!
My sister can burp the alphabet, twice, all in one loooong burp. It's really incredible. There may be Youtube footage. I'll have to check.
ReplyDeleteJan: Holy crap, I'm impressed. I mean that's a talent! :)
ReplyDeleteOne of the most elusive mysteries of life is, why are farts funny, and yet horridly embarrassing if you are heard doing it? Especially if you are a female? I have known a few women who could let 'er rip whenever the pressure was on, but most women, including me, will lock it in until they're in the bathroom or some other safe place. One more piece of evidence that LIFE ISN'T FAIR!
ReplyDelete
