February, 2020
I've been sick lately. I never get sick, so this was an unwelcome and puzzling turn of events, I didn't quite have the coping mechanism for.
Don't get me wrong, I wasn't at death's door or anything, although it felt like it at times, but I had the distinct, unpleasant sensation that my innards were all about to implode into a gaseous, gelatinous soup at any moment, which isn't ideal.
This continued for about four months in various forms and I swallowed an approximate grain silo worth of medications during that time, underwent a barrage of medical tests, with varying degrees of success, lost my appetite completely (terrible), causing me to also lose 13 lbs (not terrible!) despite the gigantic amount of fruit juice and occasional soup I was consuming since it was the only foodstuff I could deal with.
I didn't leave the house for three months at one point. Yeah.
I did take up drawing with crayons during this bout of madness. Who knew Crayola would be a serious art tool of anyone over four years old? Not me. I had a great time though, and completed an entire Moleskin notebook of crayon monsters and robots. Seriously! I also bought a new tenor ukulele and played it till my fingers hurt. Anything that involved not getting off the couch was fair game because I couldn't get off the damn couch without a major effort.
It was a bacterial infection of the gut and it was a bastard. I now have a huge appreciation for people who have digestive issues and the like, because I never had any before, and now, while I'm still recovering from this stupid thing, I'm never again going to take for granted being able to do simple things like turn over in bed, and bend down to tie my shoe because for a while there I couldn't move.
The downside? I now appear to have some sort of coffee allergy or intolerance, as every time I drink it my throat swells up a bit and I feel sick. This is beyond inconvenient! So for a while I'm going to be caffeine free. I know! This can't bode well for the world, right? Coffee is basically the reason I'm not a raging serial killer.
Hope you guys are all well? If you're still out there.
This was for you, Bill.

Wow I feel like I poked a blogger with a stick. Your recent adventure sounds awful. Why is it that many people including myself tend to recall and then recount some experience related to the one someone just told them about?
ReplyDeleteI've never been knocked down sick like that for that long. Weeks but not months. I hope it stays that way. What I do recall is the time my daughter had Salmonella. A scary awful time and we were so lucky my mother was still around to help out.
crayon monsters and robots - you should share some pictures.
And now a bad coffee reaction. That's a big change for a coffee person. It would be tough for me.
The recent event that changed my world was losing my uncle. I started posting about it around the end of November. He left us in January. The whole experience certainly gave me new thoughts about our world.
So do you buy into the idea that what doesn't kill you makes you stronger. I do, but would rather just read about it secondhand.
You did poke me with a stick and it worked! The Salmonella thing sounded awful! Must've been a terrifying time for you all.
Deletewas a nasty little thing that kept growing and changing and really floored me. Never had anything like it. So tired all the time. I just commenced work again this week.
I will go read your older entries about your uncle. How sad. Sorry for your loss.
I have mild IBS but the worst I've been is food poisoning. Luckily I only lost a week and half a stone. My friend was really ill a while back and they suspected appendicitus so they removed it. It didn't really help and now she has an intolerence to chocolate. Strange considering she used to be a chocoholic.needless to say she's not happy. Glad your gettig back o your feet though.
ReplyDeleteHey! Thank you, definitely on the upswing now. Ugh IBS sounds awful. I know so many people who suffer from that. Food poisoning though, yes, you just want to die. The worst thing! Hope you're doing ok now.
ReplyDeleteI feel the same way as your chocolate living friend about my coffee. How are mornings supposed to be fun NOW? 😁
Glad you’re feeling better. Sorry about the coffee.
ReplyDeleteP.S...how does one “follow” you?
ReplyDeleteNana!!! How the devil are you? And Jesus, I haven't used blogger properly in so long I don't even know anymore how to do a damn thing. When I'm at my PC I'll try and figure it out! 😁
DeleteGreat to see your post; I've missed your musings! I am glad you are on the mend. What you went through sounds horrible. I'd love to see the crayon drawings too... or ANY of your artwork, pics, etc. for that matter. Be well.
ReplyDeleteHi Vina!!! How the devil are you? Well the creation stuff is short of silly but hey, that's my middle name so maybe I will! 😁 Nice to hear from you!
DeleteAnd by creation I meant crayon, but my phone hates me. 😁
DeleteOH MY!!! Damn that sucks big time! The stomach illness I mean... I've never been a fan of coffee... :p
ReplyDeleteOnly thing I've had along those lines was a gastroenteritis one time (severe stomach flu) and Salmonella another. Both were real shitty, left me eating very basic foods and drinking extraordinary amounts of water for about 10 days, but no longer. I can't imagine 3 months of stomach problems! Ugh!
Glad to hear you're on the mend! Are you planning to launch your new crayola art portfolio? It could be an inspiration for thousands of parents worldwide who are locked at home with their munchkins looking for ways to entertain them! ;)
Ugh those all sound unpleasant in the extreme, Cris.
DeleteHaha, no on the crayon thing. They're just for fun in a tiny sketchbook I had and didn't know what to do with. Fun though! Bit crude. Colourful at least.
How're things in Spain right now?
Things in Spain kind of depend on where you are. In Alicante ok. Most people are fed up after 2 weeks of lockdown (were not even allowed out for exercise of any kind), but taking it one day at a time.
DeleteI think by now almost everyone knows someone who's caught Covid19, but the situation isn't too dire (for the health system I mean, for the people who are seriously ill...). I imagine it's a lot more stressful for people in Madrid where I believe the ICUs are already at capacity and an ice-skating rink has been turned into a temporary morgue. :(
That's insane. We have no lockdown yet just the general social distancing thing. Plenty of people still out walking and not quite obeying the rules. No idea what will happen next here. Europe is so much worse currently. Hope you stay healthy miss C.
DeleteWell people in Madrid 3 weeks ago pretty much proved simple "recommended social distancing" doesn't work when most of them pretty much acted like they were on vacation and flocked to the parks, picnic areas in the mountains or to the beach (where I live), taking the stupid virus with them. So we all get to pay the price! :(
DeleteYou stay away from people as much as possible! Bad lungs + coronavirus = explosive combo
Yeah always ruining it for everyone else that's what will happen here I'm sure. The provincial government already are pissed off at everyone for not acting properly. Lockdown is coming I'm sure.
DeleteIn the end I think it will be inevitable in most places...
